Q: WHY DO I NEED A GREASE ZERK IN THE STUB SHAFT OF MY TOYOTA BIRFIELD?
A: The standard procedure for greasing a birfield joint on a Toyota solid axle requires removing the wheel, locking hub/Creeper Flange, and disassembling the knuckle. By gun drilling the stub shaft and placing a grease zerk in the end of the stub shaft, you only need to remove the top of the locking hub cover or the dust cover on the Creeper Flange.
Q: DOES GUN DRILLING MAKE THE BIRFIELD WEAKER?
A: No. The grease passage is only 3/16" in diameter. The material is removed from the center axis of the stub shaft. The material along the center axis carries almost none of the torque load. Although there is a theoretical strength loss of less than 1%, exhaustive testing has demonstrated that there is no measurable loss of strength in use.
Q: CAN I USE THE GUN DRILLED BIRFIELDS WITH LONGFIELD STUDLESS HUBS?
A: Yes. The only change is that the zerk is only used when greasing the birfield. The retaining washer and screw must still be used when the vehicle is being operated. When it is time to grease the birfield, the retaining washer and screw can be quickly removed and the zerk can be installed with a 9mm socket.
Q: WHAT IS A MACHINED SPLINE SAVER?
A: The Machined Spline Saver is a shallow relief that eliminates stress concentrations caused by grooving from the tool that makes the splines on the stub shaft. The stress concentration from the spline groove is a common failure point on birfield stub shafts.
Q: WILL ALL LONGFIELD 30 SPLINE BIRFIELDS BE GUN DRILLED?
A: No, the customer will have the option to choose which style birfield you would like to purchase.
Q: HAVE YOU TRAIL TESTED THE GUN DRILLED LONGFIELDS?
A: Yes. We have been working on this product since early 2014 and have used Johnson Valley, CA as our proving grounds. We have ran some of the toughest trails out at the Hammers with zero failures or breaks.
Q: WHEN WILL THESE BE AVAILABLE TO PURCHASE?
A: The Gun Drilled option will be available in early 2015.
